THE NEW CIVIC // DIRTY REALISM
An architectural investigation into the psychological impact of urban density and the erosion of personal space. This project utilizes the wall as a primary tool to negotiate the tension between high-density environments and individual refuge. By juxtaposing the intense congestion of Herald Square with the secluded isolation of Whitehaven Beach, the design creates a unique interior sanctuary. This spatial collision allows the user to experience calming secluded landscapes within the heart of the urban mass. It is a study in how architecture can manipulate mood by filtering the chaos of the city through a lens of filtered tranquility.
Spa therapies have existed since classical times as places devoted to overall wellbeing through the renewal of mind and body. In this intervention, a series of dense walls are placed parallel to one another, responding to the traffic and density of the surrounding context. These walls open at the ground plane to facilitate circulation while cradling calming spa spaces within their mass. By penetrating the building core, these structural planes shape the interior zones and blur the line between the exposed urban condition and the protected internal atmosphere.
